LETTER: Request For Child Social Care Assessment

A parent may request a Section 17 social care assessment when their child has additional needs that impact daily life but do not meet the threshold for safeguarding concerns under Section 47. This assessment, rooted in the Children Act 1989, is designed to identify support for “children in need” including those with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or emotional and behavioural challenges that affect access to education, social inclusion, or family stability. For SEN families, a Section 17 assessment can unlock practical help such as respite care, transport assistance, or support with routines and transitions. It’s a proactive, non-crisis . . .
